Football’s biggest stage is preparing for a historic transformation as the 2026 FIFA World Cup introduces sweeping new rules and an expanded format.
A Historic Tournament Across Three Nations
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will mark a major shift in international football, featuring a revamped format and several new regulations aimed at improving the flow and fairness of the game. The tournament will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, taking place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. This tri-nation setup is expected to create a unique atmosphere while expanding the global reach of the competition.
Expansion to 48 Teams
One of the most significant changes is the increase in participating teams from 32 to 48. Under the new format, teams will be divided into 12 groups of four, raising the total number of matches from 64 to 104.

Revised Yellow Card Rules
FIFA has introduced adjustments to the yellow card accumulation system to reduce player suspensions in critical matches.
Yellow cards will now be reset at two key stages:

The objective is to ensure that top players remain available for decisive fixtures such as the semi-finals and final. However, the fundamental rule remains unchanged: two yellow cards will still result in a one-match suspension.
Stricter Time Regulations
In an effort to reduce time-wasting and maintain the pace of play, FIFA has implemented stricter time limits during matches.
Throw-ins and goal kicks must be taken within 5 seconds. If the time limit is exceeded, possession will be awarded to the opposing team.
Substitution rules have also been tightened. Players being substituted must leave the field within 10 seconds. Failure to comply will result in the incoming player waiting one minute before entering, leaving the team temporarily with ten players.
