The Football Association (FA) has begun taking precautionary measures ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup amid growing concerns over the possibility of rival teams spying on England’s training sessions.
England’s national team reportedly believes their training base in Kansas City is too exposed, increasing concerns that opponents could gain access to tactical preparations during the tournament.
Learning From the Championship Playoff Scandal
The concern comes in the wake of the recent “Spygate” controversy that has shaken English football. Southampton were recently expelled from the Championship playoffs after being found guilty of illegally spying on an opponent’s training session.
The FA is determined to avoid a similar situation when the Three Lions arrive in the United States on June 13.
Initially, England targeted Sporting Kansas City’s performance center as their main training facility for the tournament. However, the venue had already been selected by Argentina, who were given first-choice priority for exclusive training bases.
As a result, England will instead use Swope Soccer Village, Sporting Kansas City’s academy training complex located around 20 minutes from the team hotel.
FA Preparing Extra Security Measures
The FA is now preparing additional security measures to protect the squad’s privacy throughout the tournament.
Alongside tighter security, the federation is reportedly planning to install additional fencing and privacy screens around the training ground to prevent outsiders from observing closed training sessions.
England will also travel by air from Kansas City to all of their match venues during the World Cup.
The Three Lions are scheduled to face Croatia in Dallas on June 18 in their opening match of the tournament.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that privacy during training sessions is crucial in modern football, especially when teams are preparing set-piece routines, tactical formations, and penalty strategies.
According to Tuchel, even the smallest tactical details can become a major advantage if opponents gain access to them before a match.

Young Talents Join England’s Training Camp
Aside from the security concerns, England have also confirmed that several young talents will join the squad’s preparation camp in Florida ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Ethan Nwaneri is among the players included in the training group.
The highly-rated youngster will train alongside Alex Scott of AFC Bournemouth, Fulham youngster Josh King, and promising Liverpool F.C. talent Rio Ngumoha.
Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. goalkeeper Jason Steele will remain with the squad throughout the tournament as a training goalkeeper.
With growing concerns surrounding spygate issues in English football, the FA appears unwilling to take any risks as England prepare for their World Cup campaign.
