A New Era: 48-Team World Cup Format
For the first time in history, the World Cup will feature 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of four. Each team will play three matches in the group stage. The top teams will then move on to the knockout rounds, increasing competition and giving more nations a chance to shine on the world stage.
Host Nations and Opening Matches
As host countries, the United States national team, Canada national team, and Mexico national team automatically qualified for the tournament.
- Mexico will open the tournament on June 12, 2026, against South Africa national team
- Canada begins its campaign on June 13, 2026, facing Bosnia and Herzegovina national team
- United States is placed in Group D and will also play a key role as co-host
