James Rodríguez has officially joined Minnesota United in Major League Soccer as he prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a new chapter in the career of the Colombian international.
The 34-year-old midfielder has signed a short-term contract until June 2026, with an option to extend through the remainder of the MLS season. Rodríguez became a free agent in December 2025 after his contract with Club León in Mexico’s Liga MX came to an end.
A New Challenge in MLS
Speaking after the move, Rodríguez described the transfer as a fresh challenge and an important step at this stage of his career. With the World Cup fast approaching, the experienced playmaker is focused on staying competitive and match-fit at a high level.
Joining Minnesota United gives Rodríguez the opportunity to maintain consistency while adapting to a new league, as he aims to secure his place in Colombia’s World Cup squad.
Proven Experience at the Highest Level
James Rodríguez brings a wealth of experience, having previously played for top European clubs including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, AS Monaco, and Everton. Despite his age, he continues to be a reliable figure for the Colombia national team, recording 31 goals in 122 international appearances.
His most memorable international moment came at the FIFA World Cup 2014 , where he won the Adidas Golden Boot and the FIFA Puskás Award for his spectacular volley against Uruguay. Rodríguez also represented Colombia at the FIFA World Cup 2018, playing a key role throughout the tournament.

Colombia’s World Cup 2026 Group
Looking ahead to FIFA World Cup 2026, Colombia have been drawn into Group K, alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and the winner of FIFA Playoff 1, which will be contested by Congo Republic, Jamaica, and New Caledonia.
With his move to Minnesota United, Rodríguez hopes to rediscover top form and play a vital role in Colombia’s quest for success on football’s biggest stage.
