Taking a Closer Look at France’s Squad for the 2026 World Cup

One of the strongest favorites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, France continue to show steady progress in their preparations ahead of the tournament, which will take place next June.
Through their official social media accounts, the French Football Federation (FFF) officially announced the squad selected by head coach Didier Deschamps for football’s biggest stage.

A Blend of Experience and Young Talent

Didier Deschamps has called up 26 players for the tournament. Several familiar names remain the backbone of the national team, including Mike Maignan, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, N’Golo Kanté, Kylian Mbappé, and Ousmane Dembélé, all of whom are expected to play key roles once again.

At the same time, Deschamps has also placed his trust in a new generation of rising stars. Young talents such as Warren Zaïre-Emery, Maghnes Akliouche, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, and Rayan Cherki could potentially make their World Cup debuts in this year’s edition.

However, selecting the final squad was far from easy. Deschamps admitted that several players were left disappointed after failing to secure a place in the team.

One of the biggest names omitted from the squad is Eduardo Camavinga. Meanwhile, two players from Crystal Palace — Jean-Philippe Mateta and Maxence Lacroix — earned surprise call-ups for the major tournament.

Among the Favorites to Lift the Trophy

With a squad filled with world-class talent, France are once again considered one of the top contenders to win the World Cup. Their appearance in the previous final only adds extra motivation as they aim to reclaim football’s biggest prize.

Although some of Deschamps’ decisions sparked criticism from football fans around the world, the French manager remains confident in his choices. He believes the balance between experienced veterans and fearless young players could become the key to France’s success.

Deschamps also emphasized that every player selected must possess a winning mentality and be willing to put the team above individual status or personal glory.

Potentially Deschamps’ Final Tournament

The 2026 World Cup could also mark Didier Deschamps’ final tournament as head coach of the French national team before stepping down from his role.

His ambition remains enormous. Deschamps is determined to guide France to a third consecutive World Cup final, a remarkable achievement that would further cement their status as one of football’s greatest powers.

Despite several changes within the squad, France are still expected to be one of the most dangerous teams in the competition. However, Deschamps insists that winning the World Cup will require consistency, sacrifice, and complete commitment from every player throughout the tournament.
